Decisions, Decisions

Life is full of choices, and not all of them carry the same weight. Some decisions are fleeting and easy to reverse, while others leave a mark that shapes us for years to come. Knowing the difference between these types of decisions can be powerful. When we approach life with clarity about the impact of our choices, we make wiser, more intentional moves forward.

Most decisions in life are like trying on hats. They’re light, low-risk, and easy to change if they don’t quite fit. Maybe you’re deciding whether to try a new hobby, like taking up painting, or choosing a restaurant for dinner with friends. If it doesn’t work out, there’s little at stake—you can simply try a different class or pick a new place next time. Hat decisions invite us to explore new possibilities without any lasting consequences, allowing us to adapt and move on freely. They remind us that flexibility often opens the door to growth, without any major commitments.

Other choices are more like haircuts. They may not last forever, but they linger just long enough to make us pause and consider. For example, accepting a short-term job that’s outside your comfort zone or moving to a new city for a year both carry a bit more weight than a hat decision. If they don’t work out, you might experience some discomfort or regret for a while, but they’re ultimately temporary. Haircut decisions give us the courage to try something new, knowing that time will heal any missteps and leave us with a story or a valuable lesson.

Then there are tattoo decisions—the kind that demand our full attention and careful thought. These choices, once made, are with us for life and become part of who we are. Think about choosing a life partner or deciding to have children. These decisions shape us profoundly, calling for a deeper commitment and a willingness to carry their impact long-term. With tattoo decisions, it’s essential to be intentional and fully prepared for the responsibility, as they have a lasting effect on our lives and identities.

The art of wise decision-making lies in recognizing whether a choice is a hat, a haircut, or a tattoo. Embrace the hats with a sense of freedom, approach haircuts with courage, and commit to the tattoos with thoughtfulness. With this awareness, we gain the confidence to navigate life’s choices with wisdom and purpose.
