As some of you know, in addition to writing on this blog, I have recently joined The Sick Podcast network as a Montreal Canadiens’ content writer. As a content writer publishing on someone else’s website, your income often depends on clicks, reader engagement, and consistent traffic. But how can you ensure your content stands out in a sea of online information? Here are actionable strategies—from topic selection to networking—to help you drive more readers to your content and increase those valuable clicks.
To start, deception is never a good strategy. Readers are savvy, and if they feel misled by clickbait or false promises, they’re unlikely to return. The key is honesty, clear descriptions, and delivering valuable content that genuinely appeals to them. Not only is this the best approach, it’s the only one that works long-term. Respect your audience, and they’ll respect you back—even when they don’t always agree with your views.
1. Choose Irresistible Topics That Hook Readers
Content that solves problems, answers questions, or sparks curiosity is more likely to attract clicks. People search online for solutions, entertainment, or inspiration, so tailor your content to meet those needs.
Example: Instead of writing “5 Tips to Organize Your Workspace,” try something more specific and engaging, like “5 Simple Workspace Hacks That Will Instantly Boost Your Productivity.”
Research Tools: Use platforms like Google Trends, AnswerThePublic, and BuzzSumo to discover what people are currently searching for in your niche.

Pro Tip: Evergreen content—articles that remain relevant over time—will continue to attract readers long after you hit publish.
2. Write Click-Worthy Headlines (Without Being Clickbait)
Your headline is the first thing readers see, and it determines whether they click or scroll past. Crafting a compelling headline is crucial for driving traffic.

Avoid Overpromising: A strong headline should reflect the content’s value, not mislead readers. Trust builds loyal audiences.
3. Consistency Is Key: Develop a Posting Schedule
Consistency helps build a loyal audience and signals reliability. Whether it’s twice a week or once a month, stick to a regular posting schedule.
Why It Works: Audiences are more likely to return when they know when to expect new content.
How to Stay Consistent: Use a content calendar like Trello or Google Calendar to plan your posts in advance.
Quick Tip: Batch-write several articles ahead of time to maintain your publishing schedule even during busy weeks.
Example Schedule:
Monday: Post a helpful blog article.
Wednesday: Promote your post on social media.
Friday: Share a related update or behind-the-scenes insight to drive engagement.
4. Leverage Social Media to Expand Your Reach
Promoting your content is just as important as writing it. Use social media platforms to drive traffic and connect with readers.
Share Smartly: Instead of blasting links, create enticing captions or quotes to hook readers.
Example Tweet:“Struggling to get more readers? These 5 proven tips boosted my blog traffic by 200%: [link]”
Platform-Specific Strategies:
Facebook: Share in relevant groups, post on your page, and encourage discussions.
LinkedIn: Perfect for professional or industry-focused content.
Instagram: Use eye-catching visuals, carousels, or reels to share tips from your post.
Repurpose Content: Turn a blog post into snippets for Instagram, a LinkedIn article, or even a YouTube explainer video.
5. Write Engaging, SEO-Friendly Content
Optimizing for search engines (SEO) ensures your content gets discovered organically. Focus on keywords without sacrificing quality.
SEO Checklist:
Use target keywords naturally in your title, headings, and body.
Write meta descriptions that encourage clicks.
Include internal and external links for credibility.
Engagement Matters: Write with a conversational tone, short paragraphs, and visuals to keep readers hooked.
Example: A post on “Healthy Eating on a Budget” could include bullet points, practical tips, and a call-to-action (CTA) to encourage comments or shares.
6. Network With Other Writers and Websites
Collaborating with other content creators and websites can dramatically expand your audience reach.
Guest Posting: Offer to write articles for websites in your niche, linking back to your own content.
Cross-Promotion: Partner with fellow writers to share each other’s posts.
Example: “Check out Sarah’s brilliant guide on SEO writing. It’s helped me refine my own strategies.”
Join Forums and Online Communities: Sites like Reddit, Medium, or Quora allow you to answer questions while linking to relevant blog posts.
Tip: Networking isn’t just about links—engage genuinely with others to build relationships and credibility.
7. Use Data to Refine Your Strategy
Successful writers analyze their results and make improvements based on what works.
Track Key Metrics: Use Google Analytics to monitor page views, bounce rates, and average reading times.
Find Patterns: Which articles perform best? What headlines attract the most clicks?
Experiment and Optimize: If a certain topic resonates, explore similar angles in future content.
Example: If a post about “10 Productivity Hacks” performs well, follow up with “5 Morning Habits to Supercharge Your Day.”
8. Add a Personal Touch: Build Trust With Your Audience
Readers connect with content that feels authentic and relatable. Share personal experiences or insights to make your writing stand out.
Example: Instead of generic advice on time management, share your own journey: “I used to struggle with procrastination until I tried these 3 simple habits…”
Engage Directly: End your posts with questions to encourage comments: “What’s your go-to tip for staying productive?”
9. The Advantage of Networking
You can try promoting your content on your own but you will only go so far. You don’t have a constant presence online and time is limited. But if you help promote others and they, in turn, return the favour, you are all getting more exposure from non-followers at different times. Beware though that it’s a two-way street. If they do that for you and you don’t reciprocate, they will notice. Again, it’s about honesty.
Example: Find podcasts, other blogs, other writers from other similar websites, help promote them, and they are likely to do it for you.
Engage With Them: Participate in their online discussions, get to know each other and even have that talk about content sharing.
Social MediaYou want more engagement on your posts? Do the same to others. You want people to re-post your articles or podcasts? Do the same for them. You want people to be respectful? Be respectful to them.It seems like too often, people don't practice what they preach. Change that behaviour.
Generating more readers and clicks as a content writer takes a mix of strategic thinking, consistency, and creativity. By choosing compelling topics, promoting effectively, and continually refining your approach, you’ll not only increase your traffic but also build a loyal audience over time.
Remember: The more value you provide, the more readers will return—and the more income you’ll earn in the long run.
Now It’s Your Turn: Which of these strategies will you try first? Let me know in the comments!
