Life is a strange and beautiful journey. We come into this world empty-handed. No money. No reputation. Not even a name of our choosing. Just soft hands, open hearts, and the quiet potential of who we might become. From the moment we arrive, the world begins to shape us. And soon enough, we start chasing.
We chase after things we’re told will make life worthwhile. A career. A home. Respect. Love. Security. We work long hours, stress over bank accounts, and try to build a life that looks good from the outside. We collect, we store, we protect, convinced that happiness lives in what we hold.
But time reveals a quieter truth. Everything we fight so hard to gain will one day slip through our fingers. The titles, the money, the possessions… none of it can follow us beyond this life. Slowly, life teaches us what really lasts, and it’s not what we expected.
We in the middle of selling nearly all of our belongings as we prepare to move to Costa Rica to live the Pura Vida lifestyle. The process has been eye-opening. Things we once believed we couldn’t live without now feel like weight we’re grateful to release. Every item we let go of brings a strange kind of peace. Freedom isn’t in owning more. It’s in needing less.
There’s a quiet joy in simplicity. Watching the birds flit through the trees. Listening to monkeys go about their day. Sitting by the pool and hearing nothing but your own breath. Admiring the beauty that Mother Nature provides us with, including sunrises and sunsets. Meeting people whose values align with yours. These are the riches we didn’t know we were chasing all along.
What truly matters in the end isn’t what we accumulate. It’s what we give. A smile that softens someone’s day. A kind word offered freely. Time spent with no agenda. A listening ear, a comforting hand, love with no strings attached. These are the things that live on long after we’re gone.
The people we uplift, the hearts we touch, the memories we leave behind: these are our true possessions. They don’t gather dust. They don’t depreciate. They’re carried forward by others.
As we turn the page and begin this new chapter, we’re reminded that we were never meant to be defined by what we own. We were meant to be known for how we loved, how we lived, and how lightly we walked through this world. Living every day as if it’s your last one on this planet… because one day, it will be true.
So live kindly. Love fully. Give freely. Let your life be one of presence, not pressure. Because in the end, it’s not about what we held onto. It’s about what we gave away that defines the story we leave behind.
We may arrive in this life with nothing. But if we live with intention, we can leave it full of meaning.
