Ten Times We Tried Role Play

After thirty years of marriage, Daniel and Claire found themselves sitting on a beige couch across from a calm, well moisturized woman named Dr. Patel. Her office smelled faintly of lavender and accountability. Somewhere between “active listening” and “scheduled intimacy,” Dr. Patel suggested they consider role play to reignite the spark.

Her mind going 100 miles per hour, Claire nodded with enthusiasm. Daniel nodded because that seemed safest.

They agreed to be adventurous. Playful. Brave. Daniel did not anticipate that Claire, a retired federal compliance officer, would approach the assignment with the seriousness of her old job.

By week four, Daniel decided something had to be said. Being a reasonable man, he chose not to argue mid scenario while dressed as a municipal employee. Instead, he wrote a letter. His plan was simple. At their next session, he would read it aloud to Claire and Dr. Patel, calmly, respectfully… and fully clothed.

The letter began as follows.

My dearest Claire, and Dr. Patel,

I want to state for the record that I entered this experiment in good faith. I was open minded. Optimistic. Slightly intrigued.

However, the ten times we have attempted role play have not unfolded as I had envisioned.

Allow me to explain why that is.

  1. Sexy Librarian
I anticipated whispers and mischief between the stacks. Instead, I sat quietly on the bed while you read an entire chapter and shushed me twice for breathing too loudly.
  2. Sexy Doctor
You told me to wait in the bedroom. I waited two hours. When you arrived, you gave me a ten minute “diagnosis,” advised less stress, and handed me a prescription for Viagra.
  3. Sexy Professor
I showed up prepared to misbehave. You handed me a stack of old sticky notes where I had misspelled words over the years and told me to correct them and that there would be a test the following week.
  4. Sexy Maid
You entered with the outfit. My hopes rose. Then you handed it to me, produced a laminated cleaning checklist, and inspected baseboards with military precision.
  5. Sexy Flight Attendant
You leaned in and softly warned of turbulence. I prepared for excitement. You told me to buckle up and took your seat across the room for safety compliance.
  6. Sexy Cop
You pulled out the handcuffs, secured me to the bed, and informed me you had to respond to another call. I lay there reconsidering my life choices.
  7. Sexy Personal Trainer
You instructed me to get on the floor. We completed thirty minutes of planks while you corrected my posture and commented on my stamina, while I was keeping an eye on the cat who was staring at my dangling jewels.
  8. Sexy Nurse
You took my blood pressure in a very convincing outfit. It was high. We spent the evening discussing sodium intake and the risks of processed meat.
  9. Sexy Yoga Instructor
You encouraged flexibility. I pulled a hamstring attempting something called happy baby. I have never felt less joyful.
  10. Sexy Judge
You charged me with being good in bed. After reviewing the evidence, you dismissed the case for lack of proof. I objected. Overruled.

In conclusion, I remain confused.

With love,
Daniel

When Daniel finished reading, there was a long pause.

Claire stared at him, half offended, half amused, clearly replaying the laminated checklist in the maid outfit moment in her mind.

Dr. Patel adjusted her glasses, pressed her lips together to suppress a smile, and calmly wrote something in her notebook.

“Well,” she said at last, looking directly at Claire, “your commitment to realism is admirable.”

Then she turned to Daniel.

“But next week, perhaps we explore creative interpretation.”

Daniel nodded cautiously. Claire smiled slowly. And Dr. Patel quietly added fifteen minutes to the session.
