The Two Wolves

In the heart of a tranquil Cherokee village nestled amidst the ancient trees, an old chief, wise beyond his years, sat beneath the shade of a towering oak. Beside him sat his young grandson, wide-eyed and eager to absorb the teachings of his heritage.

“Grandfather,” the boy began, his voice soft and curious, “tell me about life.“

The old chief nodded, his eyes reflecting the wisdom of decades. “Life, my child, is a journey filled with choices. It is a path where every step we take shapes our destiny.”

With a gentle sigh, he continued, “Within each of us, there dwells a battle—a battle between two wolves.”

The boy furrowed his brow in confusion, eager to understand.

“One wolf,” the chief explained, his voice heavy with solemnity, “is the embodiment of all that is dark and destructive. It thrives on malice, anger, and greed. It is fuelled by self-pity and false pride, spreading misery wherever it roams.“

His gaze softened as he spoke of the other wolf. “But there is also a wolf of light—a creature of peace, love, and joy. It embodies kindness and humility, radiating warmth and compassion to all it encounters.“

The grandson listened intently, his mind swirling with the weight of his grandfather’s words.

“Every person,” the chief continued, “carries these two wolves within them, locked in an eternal struggle for dominance.“

The boy’s eyes widened as the realization dawned upon him. “Which wolf will win, Grandfather?” he asked, his voice trembling with uncertainty.

A serene smile graced the old chief’s weathered face. “The one you feed,” he replied, his words echoing through the tranquil air like the whisper of the wind.

With those simple words, the truth of existence settled upon the young boy’s shoulders like a comforting mantle. Good and evil, light and darkness—they coexisted within each soul, awaiting the nourishment of choice.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the world in hues of gold and crimson, the old chief and his grandson sat in quiet contemplation. And amidst the rustling leaves and the song of the evening birds, the timeless wisdom of the Cherokee flowed through their veins, guiding them on their journey through life.
