It was a bustling December afternoon, and the shopping centre was overflowing with holiday shoppers. Carol and her husband, Tom, were on a mission to tackle their lengthy Christmas list. Laden with bags and weaving through the crowd, Carol suddenly realized something alarming—Tom was gone.

She stopped in her tracks, scanning the sea of faces with growing irritation. Where could he possibly be? They had agreed to stick together and time was ticking. After a few moments of futile searching, her annoyance turned to worry. She pulled out her phone and dialed his number.

When he picked up, his voice was calm and unusually quiet.

Where are you?” she demanded, her frustration thinly veiled.

Tom hesitated for a moment before replying softly, “Do you remember that little jewelry shop we visited five years ago? The one with the window display that stopped you in your tracks?

Carol’s heart softened. She held the phone closer, her voice trembling. “Yes… I remember.

You saw that beautiful diamond necklace there,” Tom continued, “and you told me how much you loved it. I looked you in the eye and said, ‘One day, when we can afford it, I’ll come back and buy that necklace for you.’

Carol’s eyes welled up as she remembered that moment. A lump formed in her throat, and she whispered, “Yes, I remember… I remember it well.

There was a brief silence on the other end of the line before Tom’s voice returned, a little too cheerful now.

Well, I’m in the pub right next door to it. I’ll be here when you’re done shopping!
