We worked really hard to make life comfortable for our children, but maybe we made it too easy. Now, looking at my grandkids’ future, I really want them to appreciate the simple things in life. This, in my opinion, will help better prepare them for the trial and tribulations that they will inevitably be facing in their life.
I want them to know why wearing hand-me-downs is special, how it connects them to family stories. And I hope they enjoy homemade snow cones and leftover meatloaf sandwiches, seeing the love in every bite, sitting together around the family table.
Through tough times, I hope they learn to be humble and through lies, to be honest. These qualities will help them through life’s challenges.
I want them to be good at everyday tasks like making their beds, keeping their bedroom in order, mowing the lawn, help with the dishes and washing the family car. These things teach responsibility and pride.
I don’t want them to get everything handed to them, especially not a new car at 16. I want them to learn the value of hard work and effort and paying for your acquisitions, teaching them the value of a dollar earned.
I want them to experience both the joy of new life, like seeing puppies born, and the sadness of saying goodbye to a pet. These moments teach them to care, to grief and to be strong.
Life can be tough, but I hope they learn from it and stay true to themselves. Standing up for what’s right, even if it’s hard, shows real strength.
Sharing a room with a sibling can be fun and teaches them about sharing and love. I want them to include their younger siblings in their fun too and if they’re scared at night, to comfort them.
Walking to school with friends, rain or shine, builds character and friendship in towns where it’s safe to do so, of course. It’s important for them to learn to rely on themselves and others.
In tough times, I hope they don’t worry about looking cool and accept help when they need it. Being humble and grateful is important.
I want them to enjoy making things with their own hands, like a slingshot, a sand castle at the beach or a mud pie. It teaches creativity and accomplishment.
In a world full of screens, I hope they find joy in simple things like playing outside, family board games and reading books. These things spark curiosity and imagination.
As they grow up, I want them to experience both the good and bad of life, learning from their mistakes and growing stronger, under the safety of strong but loving parental guidance.
Life has its bumps and bruises, but they’ll learn to overcome them. From scraped knees to burnt fingers, I want them to learn resilience and caution.
We shouldn’t hide them from life’s temptations, but I hope they make smart choices and understand consequences. Real friendship is about trust and support, not just fitting in.
Most importantly, I want them to cherish family time. Whether it’s sitting with grandparents, camping with mom and dad or fishing with an uncle, these moments create lasting memories and teach important values.
I hope they experience a range of emotions and come out stronger and kinder. Life’s ups and downs shape who we are and teach us to appreciate every moment.
