The Tale of the Reluctant Bull

Some time ago, I struck up a friendship with an old rancher who’s been tending cattle for many years. He owns a few hundred acres just outside of town where his herd grazes. If you saw him, you’d think he was your typical old cowboy—tough as nails.

Not long ago, he told me he had spent $6,500 on a registered Black Angus bull earlier in the summer. I was pretty stunned by the price, but he assured me it was a good deal.

So, he turned the bull out with the herd, but all it did was munch on grass, completely uninterested in the cows. The rancher began to think he’d paid more for that bull than it was worth.

Desperation set in, so he called the vet to take a look. The vet checked out the bull and said it was healthy but maybe a bit young. He prescribed some pills for the rancher to feed the bull once a day.

It didn’t take long. Within two days, that bull was busy servicing all the cows. Every single one! And if that wasn’t enough, the frisky bull even broke through the fence and bred with all the neighbour’s cows too! He was like a machine!

Curious, I asked the rancher what was in those pills the vet gave him.

He said he wasn’t sure, but they kind of tasted like peppermint… and as he said that, his wife came out of the house with a big grin on her face.

Moral of the story:

Never underestimate the power of a little boost—especially if it tastes like peppermint!
