There was a time when integrity mattered, when leadership required a measure of respect and decency, when the future of a nation rested on the wisdom and responsibility of those in power. And yet, here we are in 2025, watching as a convicted criminal sit in the highest office in the United States—and with unwavering support. How did we get here? How did the pendulum swing so far that basic moral standards no longer seem to apply?

Criminal in power

Donald Trump, a man who wouldn’t even be allowed to apply for military service due to his criminal record, is somehow being embraced as the leader of the free world. How does this make sense? How can someone barred from serving their country in the armed forces be deemed fit to command those very same forces? And yet, this is the reality we face. A man who has publicly denigrated allies, including Canada, now has reclaimed a position where he holds our economic and political stability in his hands. Repeatedly disrespecting Canada by calling its Prime Minister “Governor of Canada” and threatening annexation as the United States’ 51st state in spite of all the pushback? Tearing a trade agreement he negotiated the last time he was in power, then imposing tariffs on an allied country?

His willingness to abandon NATO, his open admiration for authoritarian regimes, and his threats to sever ties with institutions like the World Health Organization put the entire global order at risk. He even embolden Russia further in its aggression against Ukraine, throwing the world into a conflict we may not be able to contain. How can reasonable adults justify supporting this? How did we get to a point where racism, intolerance, and blatant corruption are excused in the name of political allegiance?

One could argue that the left’s overreach pushed people toward radical alternatives, but even if that’s the case, how does that justify embracing authoritarianism? We have spent decades fighting against systemic discrimination, working toward greater inclusivity and understanding. Yet, here we are, watching as people willingly throw it all away, cheering for a man who has built his career on division and self-interest.

Canada on the same path?

The troubling part is that Canada isn’t immune to this phenomenon. With Justin Trudeau stepping down, change is already happening. Yet, instead of seeking a leader who genuinely represents a fresh direction, many are rallying behind Pierre Poilievre, whose campaign echoes the same populist rhetoric we see south of the border. His entire platform is built on slogans and misleading narratives, linking Mark Carney to Trudeau despite the fact that Carney was praised by none other than former Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

In 2012, Harper himself acknowledged Carney’s contributions to steering Canada away from the worst impacts of the 2008 global economic crisis. He even offered Carney the position of Minister of Finance after his tenure at the Bank of Canada. Harper stated: “In this time of global economic uncertainty, Governor Mark Carney has done an admirable job in fulfilling the Bank of Canada’s mandate and has been a valued partner as the Government has worked to steer Canada away from the worst impacts of the global economic recession.” And yet, Poilievre conveniently ignores these facts, preferring to pander to the same type of discontent that fueled Trump’s rise in the U.S. How do people not see the parallels? How can we ignore the warning signs when the consequences are playing out right before our eyes?

The ultra-wealthy, figures like Elon Musk, are gaining unprecedented influence under this new wave of leadership. Trump has made it clear where his loyalties lie, feeding the rich and consolidating power in the hands of those who already have more than enough. And still, people cheer him on, oblivious to the long-term consequences of their support. Poilievre, publicly endorsed by Musk, and in spite of the obvious resemblance to the controversial US President, still has too much support in Canada.

A Call for Unity

This isn’t just about politics. It’s not about Liberals vs Conservatives vs NDP or Green Party. It’s not about Democrats vs Republicans. It’s about the erosion of critical thinking, the rise of self-interest over collective good, and the willingness of people to accept lies because they align with their frustrations.

North America is at a crossroads. If we continue down this path, we risk not only economic instability but the dismantling of the democratic principles that have kept our nations strong. This is a wake-up call. The time to act is now—before it’s too late. Before we find ourselves in a world where integrity is a relic of the past and self-interest reigns supreme. The question is: will we wake up in time?
