Buy me a coffee?
An elderly woman approached the bank counter and handed her card to the teller. “I’d like to withdraw $10,” she said with a polite smile.
The teller barely glanced up before responding, “For withdrawals under $100, please use the ATM.”
The old woman hesitated. “Why is that?”
Irritated, the teller slid the card back across the counter. “That’s the policy. If you don’t have any other banking needs, please step aside—there’s a line behind you.”
The elderly woman remained silent for a moment, then calmly handed her card back. “In that case, I’d like to withdraw all the money in my account.”
The teller sighed and begrudgingly checked the balance. Her eyes widened in surprise. She leaned in slightly, her tone suddenly more respectful. “Ma’am, you have $300,000 in your account. The bank doesn’t keep that much cash on hand. You’d need to schedule an appointment for a withdrawal that large.”
The old woman nodded thoughtfully. “How much can I withdraw right now?”
The teller, now fully attentive, responded, “You can withdraw up to $3,000 immediately.”
“Then I’d like to withdraw $3,000, please.”
With a warm smile, the teller counted out the cash and handed it to her.
The elderly woman took the money, placed $10 in her purse, and then slid the remaining $2,990 back across the counter. “I’d like to deposit this back into my account.”
The teller’s face flushed as she realized what had just happened.
Moral of the story:
Never underestimate the wisdom of experience. Respect isn’t given based on age or wealth—it’s a reflection of how you treat others.
